My best guess is that this piece was made in Sheffield in 1944. I would appreciate a second (3rd, etc.) opinion on the date and help with the maker. The marks may be hard to read in photo. They are from left to right

Well, I found part of the answer to my own question. The mark is that of John Round and Sons, Ltd. Tudor Works and Arundel Works, Sheffield. Wyler merely identifies the firm as Victorian. Can anyone help me with the date? Is the "B" even a date letter? My original guess of 1944 seems wrong. TM IP: Logged |

There are no official date letters on English silverplate. Date letters are found only on sterling silver assayed at one of the English assay offices. According to experts, most of the "extra" letters in silverplater's marks, like the "B" in yours, were put there simply to make the marks resemble sterling marks at a glance. They have no other significance. Brent IP: Logged |

Thanks. Is there anyway to date silver plate? I understand the company is not in business but don't know when it ceased production. Wyler just says "Victorian," which literally would be 1837-1901. With electroplating beginning in the 1850s, is 1850-1901 a reasonbable guess, or am I being too literal. TM IP: Logged |
