I've been collecting Reed & Barton's multi-motif pattern PEARL for a few years and am amazed at the beauty and variety in the pattern. It's a wonderful art nouveau pattern with maidens in different poses all in flowing dress with garlands of flowers. I'm not very versed in mythology so I don't know if the figures represent specific characters or not.

I'm writing this post in hopes getting a dialog going about the different motifs and pieces that were made. I've seen very little in print about it. There was an article in Silver Magazine that mentioned the pattern but the discussion was about the stamped details on the blades which is fairly common for the pattern. Turner lists it but only shows one variation and I don't believe he says it is multi-motif. He lists the patent date as 1877, but all the pieces I have are stamped "Pat Applied For".

The shape of the handles are all the same with the scrolls on either side and the "+" sign at the tip. The cartouche also seems to be a pretty standard shape. I have never seen a hollow handle piece and would love to know if a HH dinner knife was ever made (I do have a solid youth or breakfast knife).

I have fourteen different motifs in my collection:

#1- Vegetable fork or perhaps the fork to the fish serving set
#2- Cream Sauce Ladle
#3- Small Soup Ladle
#4- Luncheon Fork
#5- Oyster Ladle

#6- Berry Spoon
#7- Pie Servers and Dinner Forks
#8- Large Soup Ladle
#9- Youth Fork
#10- Solid Youth or Breakfast Knife

#11- Fish or Master Butter Knife
#12- Long pickle fork
#13- Nut picks
#14- Teaspoons

Does anybody have any different motifs?

Here are a couple of examples of the elaborate stamped decoration on the blades

Hi Paul,
This is a pattern that has always interested me. It is a lovely one, and comes in a variety of items. The standard date given by Turner, Hagan and Davis & Dieble has always struck me as too late.

Thanks for sharing this. Hopefully those who know more about it will chime in and help us out.
