I have an old silver 6 slice toast rack and am very curious about it's origin. There are 5 hallmarks stamped onto the center bar which read: lower case r, secondly, a triangle with a crown or cross upon it, thirdly, upper case J.G,fourthly, upper case A 1, fithly and perpendicular to the others, upper case E P. Additionally, the number 884 is stamped onto the underside of the rack. Any insight would be greatly appreciated Thank you Thank you both for your helpful insight [This message has been edited by jackmhodge (edited 01-27-2005).] IP: Logged |

Would you be able to post a photograph of the item? I am newish to silver but believe I can safely say that the wording A1 denotes the degree of silver in a silverplate item. The letters EP would stand for ElectroPlate. Unfortunately, I cannot help you with your other query. I believe that silverplate did not carry a date letter unless of very good provenance. Hopefully, someone else will be able to assist you. Good luck. IP: Logged |

J. Gilbert & Co of Sheffield, England. Photos might allow someone to date your toastrack! IP: Logged |
