I have a pair of Gorham Silverplate candlesticks. On the bottom appears "Plated by Gorham Mfg. Co." Under that is the number 20702. What does that number indicate? Thanks! IP: Logged |

This is merely an educated guess. Gorham flatware had either a pattern name (e.g. Medici) or a number. Perhaps the same is true for candlesticks. The number might be a pattern no. It could conceibably be a patent number, but these were often preceded by "pat." Hope this helps, IP: Logged |

The general consensus of informed opinion seems to be that the mysterious numbers on the bottom of silver pieces indicate stock or inventory markings. And that these were used to order items by telegraph. But this is yet another area that needs study. IP: Logged |
