Dear all,

30 years ago I bought some small bowls in England.

Since a few weeks I'm trying to determine the origin. The hallmarks don't make any sense to me.

Can anyone help me to identify these?

On the bowls a name was engraved "Pyne's", perhaps the name of a hotel.

My eyes are not what they were, but the marks are not those for silver. I am guessing your pieces are silver plate. The letters look like epns, which usually means electroplated nickel silver. The number is probably a stock number for ordering the piece. Seymour Wyler wrote a good book on English silverplate. You might check that at the library. Only by identifying the company can you get an idea of the date. Electroplating came into use fromt he mid-19th c. My guess is what you have is Victorian (late 19th c.) -- but that is only a guess.

Your items are certainly silverplate. I suspect the mark may be for Joseph Rodgers & Sons Ltd of Sheffield, a company which began in the 18th century and still trades today (albeit taken-over in the 1970s).
