I have tried very hard to make heads or tails out of these marks. Fleur de Lis- French? The boat feels like plate, although I can't tell for absolutely sure since no silver seems to be missing. It just clinks wrong for solid silver. Before I relegate it to the, "Oh, well, I'll not worry about it," pile I thought I'd give the group a chance to enlighten me.

E. G. Webster & Son. There have been any number of posts about the firm, so try a search. IP: Logged |

The key may be that the piece "feels like silver plate." If it is plate, then the marks are probably pseudo marks added to jazz up the piece so that it looks like real silver. The sheer number of the marks make me doubt that they are real silver hallmarks as does the number, which may be stock or order number suggesting mass production. Nice piece though! Tom IP: Logged |

Somehow it is disconcerting to spend a week trying to figure it out myself just to be told in an hour flat who it is! Really, Thanks so much. There are a lot of posts on Webster on the forums. They must have made a lot of things. It's a nice, usable piece and I like the shape. I thought there were too many marks, too. IP: Logged |
