This is a piece of silverplate which the EP indicates. Additionally, the name Gorham spelled out with an anchor in shield is the standard old silverplate mark of the company. The Biltmore is the hotel that used this piece. Could you tell us what the mark is on and what it looks like, maybe even a picture, which would greatly assist us in dating the item. IP: Logged |

Hi: Would the 1913 listed under The Biltmore indicate the date? This is a handled serving dish with an insert bowl--they both have the same mark. The handles have a raised "B' on them. Thanks! IP: Logged |

P.S. So...the "G.M.Co" does indeed represent Gorham??? IP: Logged |

The 1913 probably indicates a stock or inventory number. Commercial wares, like for hotels and restaurants, are made over very long periods of time, so no date can be assigned them. There is railroad silver that was made for over 50 years. Silverplate designs that prove popular can be made for over 100 years. The GMCo would be: Gorham Manufacturing Co. IP: Logged |

Here's a photo of my Biltmore item---albeit in desparate need of a polish! Bottom dish measures 13" across handles, insert bowl is 9.5" in diameter. Some type of serving piece??? Trish

Looks like it should be filled with ice. And then have butter pats or shrimp on top. Nice item, it may have had a lid at one time. IP: Logged |
