Hello, I received a good sized serving spoon from my parents' estate a few years ago and don't know anything about it. I do not remember it being around when I was growing up, but it was amongst the rest of their silver flatware. I've exhausted the resources at the libraries in this area and the online resources I can find, but am coming up blank. I'm not even sure if it's sterling or plate. It is 13+ inches long and 7+ ounces in weight. I'd really appreciate any input anyone might have to help me identify this piece. Many thanks in advance and anticipation, IP: Logged |

Hi, and welcome to the board. I'm afraid I cannot identify the maker, but I can tell you that your spoon is silverplate. It is, of course, English as stamped, but without sterling hallmarks, which it would exhibit in lieu of the "SHEFFIELD ENGLAND" stamp were it indeed sterling. Perhaps another member with more background in silverplate can identify the maker. IP: Logged |

Stuffing spoons of this type have been a staple of the gift industry for over 50 years. The marks on them are bewildering. Seemingly identical spoons have marks from different countries. I currently have one like yours marked Reed and Barton. Sometimes I suspect that the spoons are made in base metal and unmarked; then large lots are sold to those who can finish, plate, mark and market them. That being said, these are marvelously useful spoons. Lovely and practical. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Dale; That all fits and explains my fruitless and frustrating research efforts. It is a handsome and nicely finished piece despite its lack of pedigree, and we'll continue to enjoy it. Your insight that it's intended as a stuffing spoon is great! I never put that together. It'll be a nice addition to our special holiday meals. Thanks again, IP: Logged |
