[26-0864] Hi - I've been trying to find out information on this piece I received from my Great Aunts estate. Having no luck researching on my own, I was sent here by a member of the Association of Small Collectors of Antique Silver. Any help with identifying this marking would be greatly appreciated. Here is a picture of the marking ( I hope )

The marks belong to E. G. Webster & Son. There have been many posts dealing with the firm, so try the Search function for further details. According to the illustration in Rainwater, these marks were used on sterling silver goods, but I can't confirm that one way or the other. IP: Logged |

Rainwater shows it as a sterling mark, but Turner shows it as a silverplate mark. I've seen many pieces with this mark that were definitely silverplate, seems unlikely that an American maker of this time period (1886-1928) would make a sterling piece without marking it "sterling" or "925/1000". Always assumed that this is an error in Rainwater. IP: Logged |

Thank you for your help. I've read the posts on Webster & Son - seems there is a bit of mystery on their work. Sorry for the picture being so big. I was so proud of myself that it actually posted. In photobucket, should I have chosen the option to reduce it by 25%? IP: Logged |

I am inclined to agree with you, especially as other Webster pieces did include both "sterling' and "925/1000" in addition to a company mark. IP: Logged |

Hi Rhiannon. Would you be able to post a photo of the entire object? Sometimes that is helpful to identifying silver vs. plate, though yours does sound like plate from what has been discussed so far. For good advice on how to post a correctly sized image, click on the link just under the green box at the top of any page in the forum where is says, "how to post photos" and follow the instructions. Once you have completed the process and have your photo posted, to double check its size all you need to do is point your cursor on the photo, right click your mouse and a little window will come up, point your cursor to the last word on the list which is "properties" and left click your mouse, another little window will come up and half way down you will see the pixel size of the photo you have posted.
