Can anyone tell me what these two "hooks" are for on this bowl? All I can think of is for a resting a card in (like a description of contents label) but that is a blind guess. Thanks in advance.

We also need to know the dimensions of the bowl and how far apart the hooks are. This tells a lot. IP: Logged |

Here's a shot-in-the-dark guess: The bowl is for butter, and the hooks are for the butter knife. If I turn out to be wrong, remember: I made that guess based on no picture and almost no info. IP: Logged |

The bowl is about 6" in diameter, I would say the hooks are about 3" apart. IP: Logged |

What you have is a butter or cheese dish, and the "hooks" are where a butter or cheese knife would have rested. IP: Logged |

If you check old catalogs, they invariably show the butter dish with a twist handle knive in these hooks. I have never been able to get this to work, they always fall out on me. Anyone else have this problem? IP: Logged |

Thank you doc for your answer. Would this be for the master butter (or cheese) knife? Are these dishes common? Often found without their knives? Thanks. IP: Logged |

They are fairly common items, reflecting the widespread use of butter in Victorian times. AFAIK, they did not come with their own knives. A master butter from the flatware set was used. It should have a lid and a drain pan in the center. IP: Logged |

The other thing to keep in mind is that butter was rolled into balls, the 'butterball'. The butter dish you have was meant to hold half a ball of butter. See, we keep wondering off into other areas. But these illuminate the issues involved with silver. Now to try and figure out when sugar granulation came into practice. IP: Logged |
