Hi, I have recently purchased a set of 6 Apostle Spoons in the original box. The description of these spoons was given as being over 100 years old, with the markings EPNS. Can anyone help me with the history about these spoons? I have only just started collecting silver so am not overconfident about my purchases. Thanks, Sylvia ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi Sylvia, I will try and answer your question with the little knowledge I have gathered. The marking EPNS stands for Electro Plated Nickel Silver and the spoons are therefore silver plate. It seems these spoons were made as a Christening present and the saying "to be born with a silver spoon" stems from this tradition. Hope this helps a little. IP: Logged |

Thank you agent 47, yes this does help, I was under the illusion that they were solid silver. I'll have to be more careful, and learn more about silver before making any more investments. Thanks again, Sylvia ------------------ IP: Logged |

My advice to you as a new collector to do is to take a break from buying silver and silver-like items and decide what you would like to collect. Then, then buy some reference books for your area of interest and start to teach yourself on how to sort out the real items from all of the chaff that is out there. If you go to the main page of this website there is a section on reference books to give you an idea of the richness of this kind of information that is available to people. Once you start to feel confident in your book learning, go to antique shows and talk to the larger dealers (go at off hours when they are not busy with customers). Look at their items to get a first hand feel on how things should look. Then, start with modest purchases and as you make mistakes (and everyone does) the lessons will not be overly expensive. With time you will become more adept at seeing what is good and what is not and you can expand into more costly items with greater confidence. If you are eager to dive into buying higher priced things before you are expert enough to tell the difference, you should find yourself a really honest and knowledgable dealer who is well established and offers a no hassle, lifetime genuineness guarantee where the dealer writes exactly what they tell you the item is on the receipt which also includes the written guarantee. You will pay full retail this way but you will be able to have pretty high confidence in getting what you pay for - though even the experts make mistakes once in a while. There are some pretty convincing fakes out there. IP: Logged |

Thank you very much Kimo, very sound advice there. I tend to dive in headfirst with things I take an interest in, so must slow down and learn the subject first. Thanks again, Sylvia ------------------ IP: Logged |
