My sister has 3 silver & glass perfume bottles.

We are trying to find out more about the..the makers initials are S L the assay town code has us stumped ..it looks like a football (I know it sounds silly). The other codes are a Britannia and the last is a letter Q..the box styles are cropped corners...

Any help would be appreciated. These aren't for sale as all 3 have broken necks on them, which I think would make them pretty worthless, just curious as to who made them and when.

Can you post a picture? What you descirbe sounds like silverplate, in which case the marks are not hallmarks in the true sense of the term.

Sorry I don't have any pics, I'll try and get my sis to take 1 and send it to me. Whats silverplate (sorry I have no idea about this kinda stuff) or do you mean silverplated?

The hallmark looks very worn.

Same difference. That which has been silverplated is silverplate! I refer to a process of electroplating metals like copper or nickel with a coating of silver. This process was developed in the mid-19th c. Previously something called Sheffield Plate was made by a fusion technique.

Silverplate was not generally regulated by hallmarking laws. Platers liked to put pseudo-hallmarks on their wares to help sell them. Good plate is, however, attractive and worth collecting.

If your piece were British sterling silver (solid silver, 92.5% pure), it would be stamped with a lion passant (walking), a town mark (hallmark) and a date letter as well as the maker's mark. I am goofing off at work, so I don't have access to Wyler's Book on silver plate. If no one else jumps in, I will check when I get home this evening.
