As a novice, I've been researching the markings on some silverplate spoons. The spoons both appear to be identical, however one has the markings each in a shield H B & H EP, then A1, the other has markings each in circles J A Y S then A1.

The design is Hanoverian "rat tail". They are quite heavy with deep bowls and by some research are called stuffing spoons.
I would appreciate any help with the puzzle.

Hi Bagwell

I can identify the first marks; HB & H was the main mark for Harrison Brothers & Howson (their trademark was a five point crown).

They were originally known as Harrison Brothers (from 1849, with the mark HH), but became HB & H when Howson became a partner in 1862. To quote: "The majority of flatware produced by them was EPNS, however some silver items can be found. They also produced good quality cased sets of carvers, fruit eaters and fish eater/server sets. They still trade today."

Cheers

It is not clear from your question exactly what it is that you are asking. If you want to know why different spoons from different manufacturers (they were different) look alike, it is because theyare standard patterns.

If you want to know the manuyfacturers, the first has been identified for you already. I do not recognize the second. If your JAYS is mistyped for JYAS, then in is actually JY&S for James Yates & Sons, Birmingham. The A1 notation is intended to refer to the thicknes of the silver layer.
