Hi,

Please help! I have a very old looking silver I think ice bucket (with handle) (small) has beautiful flowers engraved all along the sides, and inside has an removable tray with tiny holes around a hole big enough for your finger to lift the tray out of. Underneath it has a circle with Meriden B. Company with scales, and the number 27 along with a signature in script what look like,"mey." If anyone knows the approx date of this please let me know I'm dying with curiosity! I really vision children carrying their lunch in this to school way back when, but my husband says no!

Thank you.

Without a picture it is hard to say. But ice buckets were made from the 1850's down to the present. Most likely it was for champaign.

It sounds more like silver plate than silver, but as Dale said, you really need to post a photo of both the markings and the overall bucket.

Thank you for your replies, I emailed the pics to both of you, I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to post them on SMP!
Thanks a bunch.

Hi Lyn.

If you look at the top of any page in this forum, just under the large green box you will see a link with a little picture of a camera that says, "How to Post Photos". If you click on it you will find some very helpful and detailed, step by step instructions on how to post photos. The purpose of this forum is to share ideas and information among people who enjoy collecting silver and this can not happen when photos are not posted for everyone to see. Please take a look at the instructions, print out a copy for reference and then go through them one step at a time and you will soon be an expert at posting photos not only on this forum but on pretty much any other forum as well. smile

The mark you are referring to is the mark of Meriden Britannia Co. of Meriden, Connecticut, which originally formed in 1840 and operated at least into the 1880's; they were one of several silver part of the International Silver Company. Meriden's catalogs have been reproduced as books, which I understand are out of print, but might be available in bookstores or libraries.
