I have a coffee set from my mother, it's silver in color with the markings: NEWCASTLE, w/4 hallmarks under, 3 in shields, old script f,s,c and a bird head(not in shield) and below that #2459. An antique dealer told her(late '70's) that the mark wasn't true that it was made to look like it came from europe but was actually made in the usa. could this be true??? IP: Logged |

Yes, it can be true. A great many US makers, and more importantly their retailers, went to lengths to have an Ye Olde Englishey look to their offerings. Some of these marks were made for department store 'lines' of tableware. Complete with the name of the 'line' on them rather than the actual maker. These tend to be pieces of fine quality. The company is Forbes Silver, the silverplate holloware division of Meriden Britannia Company of Meriden CT. They and also produced product lines called "Sheffield" and "Birmingham." [This message has been edited by wev (edited 08-22-2005).] IP: Logged |
