I have a berry spoon that has a very thick handle with a short thin stem leading to a thin slotted almost flat bowl. On the thick part (about 3" long) on both sides is stamped 30WT STERLING. Is this an English or American term ? What does 30WT ( I assume this means 30 weight ) have to do with sterling ? IP: Logged |

If there is no maker's mark, my guess would be that this was made for a glass or china company. It would have come with a bowl as a serving set. And the marks on these types of items stray from standard silver language at times. Not a clue what 30 wt means. My guess is it is something about the type of sheet silver it was made from. But that is just a guess. Could you post a picture? That might help us pin down a time or era. IP: Logged |

Pure guess but could 30 WT be 3 DWT ? Silver was weighted formerly in ounces and penny weights. Penny weight is, in typical English fashion abbreviated to dwt to confuse those whose Latin is not up to it Hence LSD for Pounds ,Schillings and Pence IP: Logged |

The British abbreviation of "d" for penny comes from the word denarius. A denarius was a silver Roman coin of about the size and weight of an English penny. Pennies were originally made of silver before they switched to copper. IP: Logged |

Do please post aphoto, for the moment my guess is this is silverplate - 30wt refering to the quantity of silver used in plating a certain number (often 12) of the pieces. Sterling may be completely misleading and deliberately designed to trick the unwary, supposedly the quality of the silver used in the plating. IP: Logged |
