I recently purchased a few items of old silver spoons, pickle forks and sugar tongs without knowing anything of silverware whatsoever. Predictably I am having some difficulty in deciphering the hallsmarks and would like some advice if possible. The two pickle forks (7" long) are stamped EPNS on the fork part, which I know is electro-plated nickel silver. But the handles are very ornate and stamped LS & Co followed by an anchor, lion and small letter k. I believe this to be Birmingham 1909 with LS & Co being the maker's mark, but I could be wrong. The largest sugar/mustard spoon (4" long) is stamped Yates JY&S, J&Y Silvera & S. No hallmark as such. Two small mustard spoons, one stamped P&MS with the letters EP, C, stamped at right angles on the handle. The second spoon is stamped JR&S with a three-pointed coronet and the letters BP stamped at right angles on the handle. The pair of tongs bear what could be a hallmark but which has been worn off through age, but what I can make out is a backward facing arrow then 3 stamps, the first indistinguishable, the second could be a shield and the third is the letter C followed by the letters WP stamped on a crown-shaped mark, again at right angles to the rest of the stamp. I know this is all very vague but any help in identifying my items would be gratefully received. IP: Logged |

Your identification of Birmingham 1909 for the pickle fork handles sounds correct. There was a maker (L Smith & Co) using LS&Co around this time. Phil IP: Logged |
