Hope someone can help. i recently purchased a pair of silver? salts and I am finding it difficult to identify them. Unfortunatly I cannot post a photo but I shall try to describe the mark. They are small salts that are supported by three open winged eagles face similar to the american bald eagle. The only hallmark visible is on the chest of each of the birds. It is a diamond shape, the apex of this has an O resting on it and in the angle is the number 25. The center has an R, left hand of diamond is poss I, right hand of diamond is a C or O or poss G.The bottom of the diamond is a letter M. Please help. IP: Logged |

By your description, it sounds as if the diamond marks are British registered design lozenges. The number at the apex of the diamond indicates the series in use from 1868 to 1883. The date letter is on the right angle: C would correpond to 1870, the letters O and G were not used. M in the bottom angle is the month - June. The number 25 is the day. The number on the left is the parcel number (I guess 1 not I). So the design of your piece was registered on the 25 of June 1870 in the first batch or parcel of the day. The old registration books can still be consulted at the Public Record Office. Please check carefully, are the marks identical on each of the legs? If so, the probability is silverplate. British sterling silver is legally required to have other marks, usually including a lion passant, the city mark and the date letter. IP: Logged |

Thanks very much. There is no other markings so I suspect silver plate. Is it usual to stamp a design lozenge on a peice of silver as I have never seen this before. Thanks again. IP: Logged |

I have come across design lozenges on sterling - but the practice appears to have been very uncommon. Generally lozenges are on silverplate, as well as a host of other materials including glass, ceramics etc. IP: Logged |

I have a piece with the R in a design lozenge, and yes, it is silver plate. Tom IP: Logged |

Patrick, Is there a print source available outside of the PRO? I was not able to date the piece I have. Thanks, IP: Logged |

Tom, I don't believe anyone has ever copied the original regidstered design records in full - although they have been analysed in detail for certain types of objects or material, including corkscrews and glass. A useful site for automatically translating the lozenges is GLASS REGISTRATION LOZENGE (DIAMOND) MARK TRANSLATOR Another site, also primarily devoted to glass, has additional information, including the numerical sequence in use after lozenges ceased in 1883, is at British Registered Design numbers Hope this helps Patrick IP: Logged |
