Hello,

This is my first time posting so please excuse me for the mistakes I am bound to make here.

I do need help in identifying this hot water pot/teapot. I have searched high and low to no avail. I cannot find the HP&H maker anywhere. I am sure there is an age mark there also. Please help. (hope the pictures worked.

Thank you,
pbanz

The EP certainly means "electroplated." Silver plate was not regulated as was silver, so as I understand it there is no reliable dating system. Letters were sometimes put on it to mimick true hallmarks. If the numbers are a patent number, that may help. I cannot read the letters in the center crest. If you can say what those are, I might have more luck with the maker.

Thank You for replying TM. The letters in the center crest are HP&H. The plume mark I cannot find. The crown I believe means it was made in Sheffield England.

The piece is certainly electroplate as that unique way of writing the EP says. Some of the plate is worn from the top of the pot and the brass shining through. At least it has the color of brass.

Thanx again and good luck,
Pban

I can't find a reference to your marks in Wyler, "The Book of Sheffield Plate." The crown does not guarantee that it was made in Sheffield since, as I said, plate was not tightly regulated. The numbers suggest that maybe, this is an American company with a U.S. patent number. I just don't know.

Hi,

The item is made by Harwood,Plante & Harrison.

Made in Birmingham between 1883-1886.
The crown indicates that it was made before 1897.It is not indicating that it was made in Sheffield.

More information?
I can send you a file with that hallmark and maker and also some English information about EP and the crown mark used on plated items.

You are welcome

Best wishes from Germany

I want to thank you for your time and effort TM. I know how frustrating it gets looking up marks on silver. I spent 2 hrs in Borders book store yesterday trying to identify these marks. I did find that the symbol on the left side of the picture is most likely a shell and not a plume as I did mention. I also found a great cup of coffee and a stuffed soft pretzel which made the search a little less frustrating. It appears our neighbor from across the pond was even more fruitful in his search.

I thank you kindly for identifying the teapot Marion and responding so quickly. It sure can get frustrating researching some of these makers marks. Feel free to send me the file you have on hallmarks and EP. I am looking forward to seeing it.

And thank you SMP for being here.
Paul

Dear Tom,

you are welcome.I'm writing today from my notebook and I have no chance to send the plate information that way.

If you send me a note to my email address I can send you all these information too.

I'll be back on the net on Monday

Take care and Happy weekend

Marion
