[26-0307] I have a jigger or small tankard with a shield (kinda looks like a badge) with a large W and ae on top of the W it also has a circle with a triangle inside of it with also the letters b on top of bc inside the triangle. then it has birmingham england. the item is about 2" tall and 1 5/8 in dia. with a handle it has curves in it and a base. would like to find out something about it. thanks cowboy IP: Logged |

Without a picture, it is difficult to say much with confidence. However, since your piece is marked "Birmingham" instead of being stamped with the twon hallmark for that city, it is probably not silver but silverplate. Refer to the posting immediately before yours on the New Members page for an explanation of pseudo-hallmarks, which yours may be. A photo may allow someone on the forum to give you a better idea of when and where your piece was made from its style and maker. Good luck, IP: Logged |

In that case it may be silver but not made in Birmingham, England. I look forward to the picture, which is obviously crucial here. [This message has been edited by tmockait (edited 04-01-2005).] IP: Logged |

tom , not knowing anything about silver things. in your reply you said it was not made in birmington england. is there a reason for your reply. about being made there. and why would it be signed that way. to me the letters seem to be stamped in the bottom . the reason i say that is that they are imperfect as some letter are embossed deeper than others. at work we have names done with engravers that we can stamp into things. this could be the case. i should have the pictures back any day. thanks IP: Logged |

We really need good photos to be able to tell you what you have, but the point Tom is making is there are very strict laws in Great Britain about how real silver must be marked. Based on your description of the marks so far, your cup does not sound like it has these marks and therefore is likely to be silver plate. Also, one can not go by it being heavy since there are plated items with copper base metals or copper rich base metals which are heavy so that is not of much use. Please get some good closeup photos of all of the marks and we can be more helpful. IP: Logged |

I am not sure what metal this would be, but the markings do not indicate it being silver. My guess is a pewter type alloy. IP: Logged |
