[08-0403] Hello Please can anyone help with the following. Purchased recently are two little silver/silverplate mustard pots (?) with the following identification, all one below the other:-
Tried to take a photo but marks too small. Hopefully someone will recognize any of the marks? Thanks. IP: Logged |

Try holding a magnifying glass over the marks when you take your picture IP: Logged |

I'm pretty sure what you're describing are the marks of Thomas Prime & Sons of Birmingham, silver platers of the 2nd half of the 19th Century. IP: Logged |

Hi Blackstone - I do not think it is a Birmingham piece as the "anchor" is missing. But of course, an anchor would appear on sterling silver only. I believe I will need to resize and reshoot the marks as they are not clear enough. Thanks ! IP: Logged |

Yes, that's what I mean: that your item is silver plate, not sterling. Here is a good photo of Thomas Prime & Sons mark:
This does not have the "A" you mention, but Geo. Mappin's "Electroplated Nickel Silver, Old Sheffield and Close Plate Makers' Marks from 1784" (a very handy little book) confirms that the mark did appear with a Gothic "A1" in an oval. You'll note that your little shield with "RIN" may well be the middle letters of "PRIME" here. IP: Logged |

I found it in my little Bradbury last night and this confirmed your statement that it is J Prime from 1839. Thanks ! IP: Logged |
