I have acquired a small swan bud vase, which appears to be silver or silverplate. I never can tell the difference between the two. Does the tarnishing ever go away? A silver jewelry cloth has cleaned the vase beautifully, but there are spots of tarnish left. It really is very pretty, and I have no idea how old it is, but I would guess retro, anyway. Thanks

If you will post a clear and close-up photo of the markings we should be able to tell you. However, since you mention there are areas that don't polish up to bright silver my first thought is that it is likely silverplate with spots where the silver plating has worn off exposing the base metal underneath. Thank you for your suggestions about my vase. You are probably right about this being silverplate. There are no makers mark or other identifiers--just a green felt on the bottom. Should I look under the felt? Thank you for your help! IP: Logged |
