I picked this up at a local flea market was very grungy the tray is 12 inches long about 6 inches across and about 1.5 inches deep. Is it a vegetable tray? The mark is faint but does show Oneida USA with 2 animals holding up a coat of arms with I believe ol inside of them. I think its silver plate bur am not sure. I don't know what the use would be for?

Once more.. Probably vegatables, or maybe cold cuts.. Uncleanable grunge or grunge that has eaten through the plated surface renders the look and usability pretty close to ZERO. Best thing is to go to your local library and start looking at books that have photos of silver. Then find the person in your town / city that has the most knowledge on the subject and start asking questions. Another way to supplement your information would be to go to an antiques show... not a flea market... and ask questions, taking care not to interfere with sales. We all like to help. Tell us where you are and we can guide you to local resources. Always happy to confuse. Marc IP: Logged |

Thanks again Marc. Lots of insight you have. I did ask my wife to clean these items since they were so dirty and they came out looking very good. So do you think its silver plate also since it doesn't say sterling or does the 2 animals holding the coat of arms just date the piece? The coat of arms has ol inside underneath each other? Arthur, It is silver plate. 90% to 95% of sterling found in the USA will say sterling and most American manufacturers of sterling and silver plate would be listed in "Encyclopedia of Silver Manufactures", Revised 4th edition, by Dorothy Rainwater & Judy Redfield. published by Schiffer books. This would be the first reference book I would recomend for your silver library. Marc IP: Logged |
