Here is an intriguing bowl from Reed & Barton. The interior has a smooth Greek Key pattern around the center, but the rest of the interior surface has an irregular, almost acid-etched look to it. The piece is entirely gilded, and is marked as shown. Does anyone have any information about this line / type of decoration, or other examples to share? Brent IP: Logged |

The items from this line that I have handled have generally been more of a display type of piece than something meant for serving food. From what little I can figure out they were made in the 50's or early 60's. The 'hand crafted' is more than a bit suspicious. Most likely the gold which is probably a thin plate on base metal was attached by hand. The acid etching appears to be on fairly standard Reed and Barton blanks. Recall seeing candle sticks, wall ornaments, bookends and cigarette sets in this. Probably sold as neo-Greek though I seem to remember there is a Judaica variant. IP: Logged |

Additional memory. This coordinates with some line of glass done in the same style. IP: Logged |

Can "vermeil" be used on gilded things that are other than gold over sterling? I don't see a sterling mark, and noted the comments above. To me, vermeil is silver-gilt in French. IP: Logged |

But Ulysses this wasn't being sold in France to French people. It was sold to Americans who really don't care about all the fancy distinctions. They just wanted a fancy foreign word on the thing, whether it belonged there or not. And to make sure it coordinated with the drapes. IP: Logged |
