Hi All,

I have been asked by a friend to find out what I can about a silver mark on a teapot. I know next to nothing about silver marks and would be grateful for any guidance you can provide.

I have never seen the teapot in person but the owner states that: The marks are "X", next line "A B * S", next line " 4 2 6 8", next line "5".

Thank you so much...
Tara

Could you please post a close up photo of the markings? It hard to see any detail in the photo you have posted.

Until we see a close up of the markings, my first reaction is that it is not silver, it is silver plated. Could the marking you mention, the ab*s actually be epns? If so then it would stand for electro plated nickel silver.

Thanks so much for taking the time. I have posted a close up below. I hope this helps a little more. It would be good to know for sure the nature of the teapot.

The nature of the corrosion to the base, and the damage to the footrim both seem to indicate that the teapot is electroplated Britannia metal.

Hi Twong.

The close-up is better but it still leaves room for improvement. Could you try a photograph of the marks using a magnifying glass?

On balance, I'm inclined to think that this teapot is a nothing-special silver plated piece. There is a superior silver plating called sheffield plate (invented by Thomas Boulsover in 1743 and whenever I see a piece of silver plating, before dismissing it (sorry) I always see whether it might be sheffield plate. I don't think this is that (although it bears a passing resemblence to A Hartfield's mark of 1808) but to be sure, another picture magnified would be helpful.

Don't get hopes up - I thin on balance this is just an electro plated nickle silver (epns) item.

Kindest rgds,

Tom
