[26-0840] I am trying to determine the date of a toast rack I have. I think it's Thomas Dixon & Sons by the markings (pictures below) and in Gothic style (is that right?). It's a family hand me down so I don't know much about it. Any help much appreciated.

While I may be corrected, the marks look to be the silverplate markings for James Dixon & Sons . If the mark on the far right is a trumpet w/ banner, then it is surely James Dixon & Sons. Waylander IP: Logged |

Yes, I think you are correct. It is 'James Dixon & Sons, not Thomas. Not sure where I got 'Thomas' from. What I'd really like to find out is the approximate date of manufacture or anything else that might be of interest. IP: Logged |

This is a piece in a traditional style, which is usually not datable. Pieces of this type are made for very long periods of times, sometimes over a 100 years. Unless the mark can be tied to a time period, the age is not knowable. IP: Logged |

Well, we can certainly say this piece was made after the start of electro-plating, as a minimum. IP: Logged |

Right slamoned, we can say this was made in the last 150 years, more or less. Beyond that, I really couldn't say with any degree of confidence. IP: Logged |

That Dixon & Co had bad taste in typography? Seriously, no. The same sort of blackletter face was used by the firm for ages and probably with multiple punches. Perhaps if you could round up enough examples (say 100 or so), a rough timeline could be assembled, though that presupposes they proceeded in a forward linear fashion, which may not be the case. I wonder if anyone has done a systematic search of British records for early Dixon catalogs? It would seem, given their use of style/design numbers at least as early as their introduction of goods to the States (see my post A Satisfied Customer), that such may exist, if only for salemen's use. Given the company's prominence, duration, and diversity of product, a content-over-time database would make for a very interesting project. IP: Logged |
