Does anyone know who the Holmes was in this partnership? George Edwards was the son-in-law of Israel Holmes of Holmes, Booth & Hayden, Holmes & Tuttle, et al, but Holmes died ten years before Edwards and his unknown partner bought up the old Rogers & Britton Company in Bridgeport. Israel had four sons, but they all died in early childhood, so that lets them out. Some references say it is Israel, nonetheless -- was he an honorific partner? IP: Logged |

I doubt anyone knows at this point. And since my reference books are all in storage, there is not much I can tell you. Usually silverplate researchers do not look for family connections aside from the Rodgers. Which so completely confuses people they give up. It would not surprise me to learn that Edwards used the name of his late fatherinlaw to lend the firm some credence and stature. Or as a way of honoring him. Or as some way of gaining access to his patterns. Hagen shows the last Holmes Booth and Hayden pattern, Roman, in 1884. The first Holmes and Edwards, East Lake, in 1879. So the two firms overlapped for at least 5 years. My guess would be that after his fatherinlaw's death, Edwards took over running HB&H. After 5 years of doing so, he decided to have his own firm, but realized it would be more profitable to trade on the success of HB&H. So for a while there were two brand names, one of which was quietly laid down. There are pieces out there which are clearly HB&H patterns marked H&E. Silverplate trademarks are 'Brand Names' and really don't fit into the geneological system of the silversmithing families. Take the first part of a known brand and add on a second name: Holmes & Edwards. This is as least as confusing as cell phone company mergers. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |
