Hello all, Here are some pictures of a very Danish Modern looking tea service from Oneida, named "Hi-Light". The shapes remind me of Royal Danish by International. Decoration is limited to the swirled lines at the foot and the melon shaped finials. I have not seen any other pieces of this pattern, not have I found it in any ads or catalogs. I think it is very handsome. Does anyone know more about this line, or have other examples to share? There is another set currently up for sale on-line, but the teapot has a more conventional spout. Drawing on memory, there is also a water pitcher and butter dish in this line. Along with some generic trays. Looking at the mark, Hi Lite appears to be hand engraved not stamped. Which is typical of Oneida work from the teens onward. Oneida like Poole and IS always had a lines of plated holloware ready for incorporation into design themes. Department stores would put together a theme tabletop, dining room or whole house and give the promotion a name like Hi Lite. This would have been a coordinated 'look', like Danish Modern. Dating is very difficult as Oneida kept reintroducing old holloware under new names. Nice set, very well made. Generally among the mass producers, Oneida had the best quality control. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Dale! You always have some interesting insight into silver marketing. So you think this same design might have been sold under other names as well? Brent IP: Logged |

Yes, Oneida kept their more successful holloware going for decades under a variety of names. The teapot they used in the 20's under both Paul Revere and Bird of Paradise, was made into at least the 60's with slight decorative changes. Keep in mind that the major expense of a silverplate holloware item is the dies and forms used; which means they get used for decades. Just the decoration changes. Your set also would look very good in pewter, which Oneida does sell. IP: Logged |
