This ad shows some of the practices that set Oneida apart from the other silverplate makers. For example, this ad shows 6 active patterns, 1847 rarely had more than 4 at any given time. Oneida has always been willing to offer a pattern for as long as it sold well. And to rename patterns to suit the market. 'Patrician Moderne' began life in 1914 as plain 'Patrician'. It was initially offered as a Colonial Revival pattern. In 1931 it has transformed into an Art Deco design. The only change is that it has grille/viande forms. The teaset remains the same. The teaset form used for 'Patrician Moderne' is the same one used for 'Deauville' and 'Noblesse'. 'Grosvenor' has a unique form, used only for that pattern. "Paul Revere' and 'Bird of Paradise' share a teaset form, a Colonial Revival shape that Oneida appears to still make in stainless. Oneida recycles everything. Both 'Patrician' and 'Noblesse' appear ocassionally today as stainless restaurant patterns. And it appears that Oneida has new dies made frequently and sort of in a sloppy manner. One great frustration for silverplate matchers is the bewildering array of sizes Oneida flatware has. Dinner forks and knives in a pattern can vary by as much a quarter inch. Oneida also recycles names of patterns. At one time in the 80's there were three distinct patterns named 'Patrician'. On the other hand, Oneida is still in business and profitable. IP: Logged |
