I have a pair of Mathew Boulton covers. One is very large and the other smaller. They have a family crest engraved on them. It looks like there is a lion on the top holding a shamrock, The rest of the crest almost looks like houses lined up in a field. The left hand side of the crest has angular bars with maybe a shamrock and a cross. There are two circular star marks inside. Over years of, I'm sure, improperly cleaning them, some of the copper is showing through on the fluting of the domes. Do I leave them as they are and if I resilver do I completely devalue them. I don't know what they are worth anyway. Lucie Jacques IP: Logged |

Hello Lucie and welcome. One of the basic rules of this forum to which you agreed when you joined is that we do not discuss values. Whether you have your objects replated or not depends entirely on your personal taste. Most people who appreciate old silverplate appreciate the honest wear and patina that can come only with age. Seeing some of the base metal showing through adds to their charm and their story. However, if you prefer to have them shine look new then by all means you can get them replated. One additional caution on replating, you mention they have engraved coats of arms. If you replate them - depending on the thickness of the replating you will loose some or much of the details of the engraving. If there were mine I would leave them as is. IP: Logged |

"Silver plate" usually refers to electroplate; resilvering is merely repeating the original process. If your pieces are actually by Matthew Boulton, they are Sheffield plate, which is made by an entirely different process. It is expected that Sheffield plate will show copper from wear on the higher surfaces - it should NEVER be electroplated, as that is the equivalent of defacing it. Matther Boulton was the most highly regarded of the Sheffield platers and his works are much prized - replating will not only destroy their monetary value, it will also diminish their historical value. Please post photographs of the pieces and their marks. IP: Logged |
