I know the company that used them, but before I answer the question, it would be nice if you would tell us a bit about yourself and your interest in things silver. IP: Logged |

HI All, I guess I was a bit short in my previous post. After reading through several posts I now understand that background knowledge about the member and the question is helpful. I developed an interest in collecting sterling and silverplate very recently. I'm a math teacher residing in Connecticut. There's a lot of silver around here and I'm educating myself by researching the various pieces that I acquire. The marks I'm inquiring about are on a tea server I picked up at a flea market. I'd like to add it to my silver collection with a tag noting its age and maker. I have a lot to learn but it's extremely interesting. Eddie IP: Logged |

Greetings then and welcome to the forums -- you would be hard pressed to find a better place to learn about silver. The mark is attributed to Elizur G. Webster of New York City during one of his numerous partnerships. Rainwater states that this mark was used on sterling goods, but I have seen a number of pieces so marked that were silverplate. Exact dating is difficult; the best that can be said is somewhere between 1865 and 1928. IP: Logged |

There is nothing wrong with being interested in all things silver. I have to ask, is your collecting a hobby or a financial investment. If your answer is the latter, then you are only safe buying silver coinage (pre 1965) or silver eagles, or bullion. I'm really trying to assess why people on here keep posting stuff about useless things. I do understand if you are a collector, but surely, not everyone on here is a collector. Just my 2 cents worth.... IP: Logged |

Welcome to the forum eddie. Just last week I found a nice covered serving dish with the same marks. It is under the heading "Grape Pattern Bowl" here. May be some thing in it helpful to you from the other posters. mk4420 - Sorry that what makes the forum members here happy, makes you upset with our choice. If the whole world thought and felt alike this would be a very dull world indeed. Through history there have been people who by one form or another attempted to control others thoughts or deeds. I say live and let live. You enjoy your investing and we will enjoy our pursuit of history and art, because some of these objects plate or coin or sterling are art. IP: Logged |

A welcome to the forums from me also, eddie55m. I am finding this site a wonderful place to learn from a growing group of interesting and (for the most part) sensitive folks who have a great deal of knowledge about the historic, cultural, and artistic aspects of the metal silver and are willing to share their knowledge most generously. To mk4420, your 2 cents' worth and mine appear to be poles apart! I'm content to have it that way as long as you'll let me continue to explore my interests and not try to change the focus of a fabulous site. I'm sure there are other groups on sites out there where the members subscribe to your point of view; I'm not going to seek them out nor am I going to try to change your way of viewing silver, although I suspect you could learn a great deal if you'd read some of the posts here with a somewhat more open mind . . . Best of luck to you in your search for a profit! IP: Logged |

wev, venus, and witzhall, Thank you very much for your warm welcome. I have taken so long to reply because I was unsure how to deal with the response from mk4420. I noticed that he has written in several forums and seemed to raise discontent in all of them. I decided that that was his intent and therefore will attempt to ignore the barbs. Thank you again for welcoming me. ------------------ IP: Logged |
