[26-1133] Hello again, This item has a material stamp but no makers mark. Why they wouldn't own up to this piece is beyond me. Would it be a teapot, hot water or milk pot?
Thanks IP: Logged |

Markings on silver plated things is pretty haphazard. A couple of reasons I can think of as to why are that a factory didn't see silver plate as anything special and it would save them a bit of money to not have to mark things that were essentially just commodities; and, large retailers who ordered large production runs may have not wanted to have a maker identified to protect their business arrangements with their suppliers. As for what the little pot might be, my first thought was it could be a bit of restaurant or hotel ware used for an individual serving of hot water for tea or perhaps an individual serving of coffee. Why how pretty is that.... it sure doesn't look like restaurant ware to me. Very nice find. Myself, I like silverplate just as well as I do sterling. Would rather have a well made s/p item than an ill made sterling. Perhaps it had a pasted on label at one time? IP: Logged |

Hi Kimo, That would be a couple possible reasons for not putting any identification on the product and most likely the true reason. I have been going through library books and the net all day trying to identify the finial or pattern. No luck but I had some interesting reading. I did read in a collectors book (The Antiques Hunters Guide- Silver and pewter)that Silver plate producers started placing their names on their wares by the middle of the 19th century. The english were really bad until that time about placing their name on silver plate. I don't know if this is that old but...the search goes on. Thank You IP: Logged |

Hi Venus, Yes it is a very pretty pot. Thank you for noticing the beauty. <smile> No sticker or label evidence that I could see of course. I didn't do the cleaning but I polished it. They were clean when I got them. I do like silver to shine as it was meant to. I did get a Rogers & Smith water pitcher that I had to use some elbow grease on. It turned out beautiful too.

Lovely pot, very nicely detailed and quite crisp. My guess is that this was a teapot. Originally it probably came as it is now and with legs, which would have added height. As to the lack of a mark, it is not unheard of for the mark to be on a leg. And if this has been cut down, during replating, that would explain it. See if you can feel any slight roughness where a leg would have been soldered on. Other reason, there seems to have been a procession of dies. When new they were used by the major eastern makers. As styles changed, the dies moved to lesser makers. And finally to the Western factories: Rockford and Aurora both in Illinois. The partial mark looks like an Aurora one. Sometimes makers left off their own marks so that retailers could afix theirs. IP: Logged |

Hi Dale, I checked the bottom and there are no indications of having legs. It does appear to have been resilvered though. They could very well have done a good job covering up the marks left by the legs in the process. International silver, for one, did place their initials on the legs on many of their products and I am sure many other companies as well. Thanks for the tip and on to the search As always IP: Logged |
