[26-1156] Hello all, I'm not much of a collector to be honest, having said that I like to scour jumble sales and car boots looking for the odd piece, it probably stems from when I was about 9 and came home with silver sugar spoon I'd bought at the school fair for 2p which I still have 30yrs later LOL. I don't really check the markings either, I just enjoy them for what they are. But I've had this silver tea set given me by my mum, i say silver I'm not completely sure, it may be plate, now my daughter, who is 12, loves to polish my silver pieces and I'm a bit worried that if the sets plate, to much polishing could be bad for it? the reason i think its plate is that it says P.N.S then a symbol, all the pieces say the same except one which looks its been rubbed away. There is definitely never been a E before the P.N.S so I'm a bit confused, any info would be gratefully received Its a really nice looking set though, what do you think?
Thanks for reading IP: Logged |

I believe that the .P.N.S is part of E.P.N.S. and that your set is ElectroPlated Nickle Silver. Note that the period on the end of the S did not get marked and there appears to be a .(period) peceeding the P. If this appears on a domed surface it would make sense that the outermost characters would not be marked easily or even be eliminated when stamped. I have never seen the mark next to the EPNS mark before. Perhaps it was placed there by a previous owner. Fred IP: Logged |

It appears that the "E" was somehow broken off or intentionally removed from the stamp the company used, though I am not sure why they would have intentionally removed it unless they used a plating process other than electro-plating. Now would be the perfect time to teach your daughter how to care for such a lovely tea set that will one day be hers. Perhaps you might even make it a birthday present or such so she may enjoy it all the more. While she is receptive to polishing silver, take the time now to discuss with her things like non-abrasive vs. abrasive polishes, how to polish gently, how to appreciate patina especially in the crevices so that there is a more three-dimensional appearance to the objects, how to store silver away from possible sources of sulfur (away from things made of rubber, away from a kitchen where there is a gas stove, etc.) so that it doesn't tarnish very quickly. You can even encourage her to invite you to "teas" with her using this set so she will develop fond memories to cherish in future years. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info guys, that's quite interesting as I live really close to Sheffield, my family's always lived near here so its quite possibly a local piece. With half the puzzle solved I'll keep on with investigating the symbol and see if I can come up with a local maker IP: Logged |
