Here is a fascinating antique silverplated box. It is a garden variety 1880s/1890s silver over brass box (die-struck floral designs against a stippled ground), with one interesting addition: on the lid, somebody mounted an earlier (ca 1840s-1870s) element from a ring or stickpin. It is made of 14k gold and features an oval border of small pearls surrounding a baby's tooth. I can only guess about the story behind this item. A relatively inexpensive, fairly generic box mounted with a highly personal, custom-made, tooth-containing piece of jewelry. I would love to hear what other Forum members think this box could signify, as well as if others have seen similar items.
