Can someone please tell me about my Rogers Bros. First Love International Silverware. I had forgotten this one, because I use it eveyday, and don't really consider it as a collection item. I grew up with it, and just purchased a lot of it. I like it a lot. I know it's not solid Sterling, but would really like to know the silver content of the pieces. I know nothing about it, so any information would be wonderful. The only thing I knew about it was, to watch for the new Korean version of the pattern, and don't even remember if it was good or bad. I also have many extra pieces like the tomato "Thingie" and others like that. Thank you in advance. ------------------ IP: Logged |

The pattern was introduced in 1937 and it is silver plated rather than silver. This means that the part that is silver is a thin layer electroplated onto the surface of the base metal that makes up most of the flatware. Silver plated objects can be very beautiful and while they do not have the silver bullion content value of sterling objects many of them have strong artistic value to people such as your flatware has to you. For example, I have a silver plated tea set made by the Rockford Silver Plate Company that has one of the most attractive early art deco designs on it that I have ever seen on either sterling or silver plated sets. First Love was the most successful pattern ever produced by International Silver. From 1937 when it was introduced into the mid 50's it dominated the silverplate line. From customer reports, First Love was still offered at jewelry stores into the late 60's. IS discontinued First Love in the mid 50's. The way this worked was that IS sent a letter to its customers announcing the end of the pattern with a request that everyone order what they needed to fill in existing sets. Once the orders were received, the company did its final run. This production always went over the number requested in orders. IS then sat on a large inventory of First Love blanks, plating and shipping as stragglers placed orders. They appear to have used up their stash in about 1965. At this point, whatever was left was offered to matching services. I knew someone who bought 1,000 place settings at that time. IS had a policy of making up any discontinued pattern when they had an order for 10,000 place settings. First Love was a full line pattern with holloware. There is a 5 piece tea set, trays, bowls and candle sticks. There are 4 sizes of the pattern: luncheon and dinner, regular and viande. There is also a coordinated line of glass, made I believe by Heisey. First Love is almost always in good shape, unlike the next 5 patterns offered by IS. It was the last pattern that maintained good quality. The next one Adoration is iffy, Eternally Yours, Remembrance, Daffodil and Flair are usually messes. IP: Logged |
