[26-1059] Wonder if anyone has any idea what this is and where in the world it was made? My thoughts are going in the direction of it being from India. There are no makers mark or any other kind of mark. It weights 12 oz is 7" tall and 4" across. The bowl and the base are hammered. It came my way via a flea market, which goes back to a yard sale given by a antique dealer in a nearby town. As far as what it is, I thought of a trophy or a chalice. Anyone have any ideas or knowledge?

Venus, why do you think India? I ask because that would not have occurred to me. [This message has been edited by adelapt (edited 05-21-2006).] IP: Logged |

Mainly because of the lack of any marks. But then again many items from India are "fancy" not so simplistic. After I posted, my thoughts turned to Turkey. Just don't know, but I would like to. You have any thoughts? IP: Logged |

I think it is wanting to be something around the arts and crafts or art nouveau style, though I have no idea of what country or even region. Can you tell what is the metal? IP: Logged |

Yes, it is some kind of silver. Without markings it is most probably s/p. In real life it is most graceful, and a pleasure to look at. I have placed it with my favorite things. IP: Logged |

My guess is that this is a trophy made before 1940. Trophy forms were produced by small companies, the marking is very erratic and they come in all shapes and sizes. Probably at one time this stood on a base, wood or metal, and was meant to be engraved. Trophy shops assemble the trophy from an assortment of parts. They also do engraving. Which sort of explains why the individual pieces are not marked. Trophies are an interesting area of collecting. My experience is that trophies are lightly plated, then covered with loads of lacquer. Over the years, they tend to become disassembled. If this were on a large wood base, with room for individual plaques, it probably eventually came off. Nice piece, and probably better without the water polo winners names on it. IP: Logged |

too funny Dale.... Ya it looks like it may have been made as a trophy. But if it ever had any laquer it is now gone with the wind. How did they attatch them to bases? The base of this is not flat, but concave. IP: Logged |
