Hello,

My name is Brian. I have an absolute fascination with history. More specifically the Victorian era. I scour many second hand stores antique shops, garage and yard sales.

I have an eclectic collection of coins, maps, photos, vintage jewelry and various sterling dishes and bowls, and other things that are just old.

I found your forum and found it interesting.
Hopefully I will recognize others items and be able to help out.

I came across this dish in a second hand store recently. I was under the impression that I was buying silver plate.

Upon further inspection I realized that it was not silver plate. I have inspected every last millimeter of this dish on both sides and cannot find a mark on it.

I flipped it over and dropped some 22k Nitric acid on a small spot. It tests well for silver.

Without a Makers mark, Hallmark, export or assayers mark, I am kind of stumped on this one.

If anyone can help with a maker, era, region, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Brian

The piece is die stamped and as die stamping was not used before the early 19th century it cannot be earlier than that. As to manufacturer and region that would be almost impossible to determine unless someone has an old company sales brochure. It appears to be 20th century but that is just a guess. Nice looking design.

look for marks within the ornamentation.
When testing for silver - did you remember to scrathc so that you came in contact with base material?

One very important fact we need are measurements. What is the size? Does it measure in even units with English or metric?

Looking at it, my first impression is that this was part of something bigger. Perhaps part of a serving piece where it was the top that fit into a base that could be filled with hot water. Multi-unit items sometimes have erratic markings.

The dimensions are L 8.6" x W 5.4" x H .7" center, 1.3" Edge.
The material thickness is .045"
The measurements do not seem to be even in English or metric.

As for the material, I am certain it is not plated. In the second photo you can see a grey/dark spot where I acid tested this piece.

Before testing, I put a few short deep scratches to make sure I was down below any plating.

It only turned dark with no green bubbles.
