[26-1947] Hello and thanks in advance... Can anyone tell me the name of this item? My mother had it and she told me it was used in floral arranging, but she cannot remember its proper name. "We're not being snoopy; knowing will help us help you:" Snoop all you like. I'm southern, snoopy is my middle name. "What is your interest in silver?" My sister and I have several family pieces and more than to clean them, I have taken no steps to understand what we have or how we should actually be taking care of it. We were visiting over holidays in Tennessee, and she brought this piece out to ask me if I remembered what mother had called it. Since I live in Atlanta, she asked me to see if any of my friends would know what it is called. (I am a decorative artist and work within the design trade.) "What is it that you hope to learn from this question?" The name of that darn thing...I can distantly hear my mother saying it...I just can't recall it. For pity's sake I posted on your forum at three in the morning, help me get a night's sleep. "What is your purpose in asking?" General knowledge, and a desperate burning desire to show my big sister I can actually answer a question she doesn't already have the answer to. As to what her intent is in knowing, if she does post it on some big west coast auction site, I should think she will do far better to say "A silver container for floral arrangements" rather than call it a name for the life of us both we can't remember.
Thank you again for your time and assistance. Caroline W.

The device is known as a 'flower frog' for no clear reason. Flower frogs are still made, usually in glass or plastic now. The one you have likely dates from the teens or twenties. What is the mark? If it is one of the many International Silver marks, it was sold as coordinating with 1847 Rogers pattern Ancestral. If you google flower frog you can find out more. Neat piece, what are the marks? Dale: Thank you my dear! My money is you have helped solve this family mystery...fleur grenouille. It would have been just like my father to "fancy" up flower frog. Again...thank you so much for spending your time in responding to my question. We will have a great laugh over it next Christmas and I promise to toast you. Caroline IP: Logged |

Here is another flower frog ( Camellias) with some flowers in it. This one came from my mother years ago and we have enjoyed using it. Thanks Caroline for your thoughtful comments and I hope you continue to post silver that you like and want information about. Atlanta is a great place to look for silver as is the whole south for that matter. The non-commercial aspect of this forum is what I like. The Antiques Roadshow on PBS seems to have taken another route; i.e. spending precious airtime on prices that thrill the audience, but are often unrealistic and meaningless. For those that want to find prices, the internet is filled with resources about prices of all things great and small. For me it is wonderful to get away from that for a time. IP: Logged |

I believe over time the use and name for this has evolved. I have seen these called a Covered Rose Bowl or a Potpourri Bowl. At the turn of the century, a Covered Rose Bowl, contained fresh or dried roses/flowers. The openings on the lid were so the scent would fill the room. As time marched on these were used with & without a "frog" for flower arrangements. A frog is a small glass, wire mess or metal spike device for holding the stems of the flowers. A rose bowl being used for flower arrangement might have a frog inside. A few frog examples:

There is a site for Flower Frog Collectors. It shows some of the varieties of frogs. IP: Logged |

The mark is one of the International Silver Company marks. IS was the successor to the Meriden Brittania Company, hence the MB. From the other information, I would place this as around 1918 to 1920. It is in the vague neoclassical tradition that IS associated with its 1847 pattern Ancestral. Nice piece, enjoy it Caroline. IP: Logged |

Coming late to this thread, I've always called these something along the lines of "centerpiece bowl with flower arranger", usually tossing in "frog" as a keyword, and finally found this pic in my images stash: From a 1931 catalog page for 1847 Rogers Ambassador pattern.
