[01-1126] I just purchased 12 Reed and Barton spoons at an estate sale and am trying to identify them. I am a novice and don't know how to tell if they are sterling or silverplate. The spoons are 5 3/4" long with a small V cut out of the tip of the bowl. There are grape clusters at the end and in the middle of the handle with a grouping of what appears to be leaves. There is a vine(?)type pattern on the back of the handle. All I can read on the back is Reed & Barton near the bowl. Half way down the handle I am guessing it says PAT.APP'D FOR based on other posting I have read. This is my first estate sale purchase and would appreciate help identifying the pattern. The pattern sounds very much like Sheffield from 1910, which has the same back as Modern Art 1904. The little notch would indicate that these were orange or fruit spoons. They are silverplate. Reed and Barton sterling is almost always marked sterling. [This message has been edited by Dale (edited 06-19-2003).] IP: Logged |

Dale, Thank you for your assistance. I have a lot to learn about buying silver at estate sales. I believed the auctioneer when he said the spoons were sterling. Still, since I bought 12 Sheffield 1910 fruit spoons and 6 Bride 1923 pickle/olive forks for very little $, I guess I didn't do too bad. I have cleaned them and they look to be in good condition. I plan on heading to the book store with my profits and buy some good resource books on sterling and silverplate. Thanks again. I was going nuts trying to identify the spoons. ------------------ IP: Logged |
