[01-1303] I saw 3 serving spoons a few days ago at a resale shop by Rogers. Two of them formed a pair (salad set?) and had a nicely done design featuring a dolphin on the handle, the third had an interesting pierced work bowl with what looked like butterflies and a sort of 1880 looking Victorian handle. They were good designs for their period and well executed, but I didn't buy them because I guess I'm a bit snobbish about buying silverplate, especially by Rogers. How do others feel about this? Actually I probably would have bought them. Silverplate and sterling, aside from having been sold in the silver department, really do not have a lot in common. The markets for them are radically different. The supply is also different. Curious if anyone here either collects and/or deals in both. PS, where did you see these? IP: Logged |

I have mixed feelings about silverplate and normally do not purchase it for myself. However, I have a set of dessert forks by Rogers with the dolphins ( if my memory is working, the pattern is called "Columbia", to commemorate the Columbian exposition in 1893 or whatever date). I occasionally think of parting with them since they are plate, but when I look at them I always change my mind. So I guess I'm on the "buy what you enjoy" side of the fence. And IMHO they're nicer than some of the modern replicas of old sterling patterns that I've seen. IP: Logged |
