Hi all I have just purchased a silver color half pint mug. I cannot find any hallmark. On the base there is a flag with W & H in it, then underneath Walker & Hall, Sheffield, then under that 1478 A, under that, 1/2, then under that a number that looks like 34. At the top of the mug by the handle is a crown with GR under it and 37 under that, under that it says half-pint, then under that a letter G, and under that the number 32. I realize that it is made by Walker & Hall of Sheffield probably for King George V1 coronation in 1937 but would like more info re the rest of the stamps if anyone knows. Thanks for your help. I suspect that the GR 37 mark on the side of your beer mark is is the legal mark to indicate the mug holds a full half-pint, a statutory requirement for selling beer in pubs. It would date to either George V or George VI, but I think the 37 refers to the regional Weights & Measures Office which stamped the piece rather than the year. IP: Logged |

Patrick, sorry no photo at the moment. What do you think the number 1478A refers to. I am totally new to all this, I guess it is silver plate or EPNS as there is no hallmark IP: Logged |

My guess is that 1478 A was the pattern number. Your piece is almost certainly silverplate or pewter, not sterling. IP: Logged |

Patrick, I think it's more likely to be silver plate because I think Walker and Hall are famous for silver or plate. I have another piece, a goblet, stamped Meriden Brit. Company, which has been silverplated but most of it has gone. I have learnt about the makers - the base metal looks very like pewter, did they use to plate over pewter? Or is it likely to be something else? IP: Logged |

I looked for Walkr & Hall tankards on the internet and found one mention of a pewter one - but no photo, so I can't be sure. The Meriden Britannia Company was originally founded in 1852 working in britannia metal, a type of pewter. By 1855 they had began to silverplate over this metal. Subsequently the discovery of large reserves of nickel allowed the cheap production of a white base metal. IP: Logged |
