[01-1637] I've tried to figure out who the maker was and if the item is sterling or plate. I just haven't been able to determine it. I really appreciate any help! Thanks,

I wonder if dobermom has given up yet? These are the marks of ELIZUR G. WEBSTER & Co. of New York. - HELP!! In any case, I am sure that they will be covered in the "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers" by Dorothy Rainwater!! It is a mark for E.G.Webster & Son (1886-1923 or '28) and Rainwater does show it as a sterling mark, but Turner shows it as a silverplate mark. Having seen several pieces with this mark that were definitely plated and adding in that an American maker of that time period would be unlikely to make a sterling piece without marking it "sterling" or "925/1000" it would seem that perhaps this is an error in Rainwater. I've run across the top set of marks with the the pseudo-hallmarks underneath, with "EGW&S" underneath, and also with "E.G.Webster & Son". Rainwater says the company was known for English reproductions, this might explain why the "British hallmark" type marks were used. Hopefully Dale will come in with the correct information. These look like the type of psuedo hallmarks that appear on high quality silverplate down into the present. I am hesitant to assign them to just one company. My take is that these marks were used by successor firms for a long time after Webster went out of business. They are adapted from Sheffield fusion plate markings. I really could not assign a date to the items. It is also highly possible that the dies were acquired by another firm that continued to produce with these marks as a brand name. This is an area that really needs research. IP: Logged |
