[01-1980] Help, I have a set of flatware that has the Schweitzer Silver Corp. mark. It is defiantly their mark. An S in a box sitting on the corner. My question. My book says they made hollow ware. So how come I am finding it on this set of flatware. Thanks.

The Schweitzer Silver Co. did use an S in a diamond trademark, but that doesn't necessarily mean that no one else could. Also, Rainwater is not infallible, though it is usually correct. Are there any other marks? It might even be European, which would explain the identification problem. Hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |

Thank you for the pictures! Judging from the style, I would date the pattern to the 1910's or 20's. The mark does look like Schweitzer, but I don't think these pieces are by them. If I had to guess, I would say that the likely manufacturer is the Shapleigh Hardware Co., which manufactured a "Diamond" brand of flatware. Shapleigh, like Simmons Hardware, were primarily makers of knives and other tools, but did branch out into silverplated cutlery. Your pieces look like Simmons Hardware pieces I have seen in the past; silverplate over steel, with thick, solid handles. Anyway, that would be my best guess. If nothing else, I am almost certain that Schweitzer had nothing to do with this. Hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |

Brent, would the under metal look like silver from this maker? These have some wear marks but the inner metal still shines and looks like silver rather then the other plate loss I have seen. And believe me I have seen a lot! I love to clean silver and have well over 50 different pattens of flatware at this time. None look like this type of wear. Any guesses? Thanks IP: Logged |

Hi, Take a look at the entry for Shapleigh Hardware in Rainwater; they mention that some of their flatware is of a special alloy that is "a pure white silver color through and through". This alloy is likely a variation on nickel silver; some nickel silvers are very white, others tend towards yellow. If you flatware is not plated steel, it is probably this alloy mentioned in the entry. Brent IP: Logged |

Thanks! I will read that section. That would explain a lot with this set! IP: Logged |
