[01-2280] A few years ago my mother-in-law gave us her mother's silver. In the box I found a commemorative spoon from the visit of George VI and the Queen Mother to Canada. The spoon is marked "WM. Rogers & Son," and "IS". What does the "IS" stand for? The spoon feels and looks like silver rather than plate. Thanks in advance for any help. Tom

IS is for Intenational Silver, which absorbed the Rogers firm, along with others, and continued to use their name. IP: Logged |

So is it plate or silver? It does not say sterling, but I don't know the conventions for Canadian markings. Thanks, IP: Logged |

Dale, I could not find any reference to the tomato spoon, but I was intrigued to find that IS made an identical commemorative spoon, same pattern, but with the inscription "visit to America." George and his queen were the first to visit North America. Since it is not marked sterling, I presume it is silver plate. Thanks for the help, IP: Logged |
