[26-1764]

I have a tea pot that was my grandmother's. It is marked Jos. Heinrichs, Paris + New York. In addition on the bottom I find Silver Soldered, CAFE SAVERIN N.Y. 29

Thank you in advance for any information you can give me on this item.

The Cafe Savarin was a high-end New York restaurant occupying eight floors of the Equitable Building, opened in 1888:

1888 New York Times article

The building was destroyed by fire in 1912:

New York, NY Equitable Building Fire, Jan 1912

I'll leave the rest for others to fill in.

I should've added the usual disclaimer that this is not a place to discuss value, so you won't get any help on that. Here we talk about silver as intrinsically interesting, and we may be able to answer questions about identification, but it's not a place for research dealing with appraisal, buying and selling, or value. That's why Scott - our host here in the Forums - suggested for you to go back and read the information in the yellow box and its links.

Thanks, I'm more interested in Jos. Heinrich the maker since you already provided great information on Cafe Savarin. Thanks again.

Hi and welcome. What kind of silver do you collect? Do you specialize in tea pots? Since you mentioned you were interested in the value of this pot - are you doing some reasearch to sell it?

Thanks,
Kimo

Hi. If you search this very site you will find an extended posting from 2002 on Heinrichs. The link is: Jos.Heinrichs, Paris +New York

I also found a piece in "Style 1900":

An interesting item. Most likely it is an individual tea pot. What size is it?

Very little is known about commercial silverplate. It is really helpful to have the mark showing both Paris and NY. What the number 29 indicates is anyone's guess. It may be the part number. But then there are other possiblities.

What I can say about commercial silver is that usually it is made in large quantities. And sold over a long period of time. Frequently the name of the original restaurant is on the bottom long after the restaurant has closed. Restaurant silver has a tendency to migrate.

One use for the little teapots is that eventually some show up in toy stores as part of play teasets.

This was an item that I received from my Grandmother. I don't think I mentioned value, but I would be interested in determining the actual value of the piece. Is there somewhere I can go to best get the value information? Perhaps, I would be interested in selling, not sure just yet.
