As a die hard fan of the Antiques roadshow... I remember seeing one segment where someone had a set of silver that was silver plate and actually more valuable then if it were sterling.

Is there a certain maker or era for this to be so? I am coming across an awful lot of silver plate and some looks very nice but I am wary of buying any that doesn't have value. I am collecting for value as well as what I like.

Tks.

Probably the item was a design by Dr Christopher Dresser. His designs for hot water kettles in silver plate can bring 5 figure sums in pounds or dollars Currently he is exceedingly fashionable and, like Archibald Knox, anything that can be attributed to him fetches serious money. Unlike some of the other big names (Hester Bateman in silver, Clarice Cliff and Moorecroft in Ceramics etc) I think his designs will have lasting value.

But buy for quality and design, not for a name.

If you get all three its a bonus

I've to check my plate, I recognize some of the names Clive E Taylor mentioned I'm rich smile. Serious there must be found somewhere a piece made by the important people you mentioned.Always my second thought is: what's the price of a good alarm system, pay some guards, pay extra insurance and still enjoy your silver or plate by taking it out the safe. No if I find a rather expensive piece than I make a photo of it and keep it in memory. Until now only one time it happened in my life.

I just had bought a dutch jardiniere made by a famous dutch silversmith and I have bought it already.

Why? I became nervous by holding it and get it out or place it in the glass window case.

From the money I now sometimes buy (of course less valuable) silver or plate but enjoy the patterns. Buying from internet only when I see/recognize silver marks.(or think I see some?).

Selling books myself at internet and use the money for to buy some silver books.

Also nice programs are "flog it" and "bargain" hunt (BBC) mostly each day.

around 12.00-14.00. But there's a lot of silver not sold, or sold as a bargain.

So auctions can also be interesting, you can see differences between local auction halls. Sometimes I get the feeling that auctioneers start with a very low price and finally after a endless series of bids it's sold.

Sometimes there are telephone dealers who buy in order of mostly rich AMERICAN'S ?.

But back to the point, valuable pieces don't mean that you buy them for the beautiful pattern or craftsmanship or seeing only $$$$$$$$$$.

Knowledge for to answer all the questions is also unpayable.

Enjoy the hobby!
