[26-1829] Well, I got on the Internet a toast holder "silverplated" but... there is no hallmark at all. Could it be possible? Is it a way to identify silver or silverplate without having a Master in sciences? I'd like to know before being angry against the seller... IP: Logged |

That is very much possible. Silver marks was mandatory because silver was expensive and by adding too much copper a silversmith could earn money. So silver was regulated. Silver plate manufacturers would like to be compared with silver - so they copied the idea of marks. But no one demanded this - marks on silverplate is a marketing gimmick. With no value what so ever. In my country 3 towers = silver since 1608. 400 years last year. In the 1890's some smart silver plate manufactures invented 2 towers. They say - "buy 3 towers silver and get silver for yourself, your children and their children. Buy 2 towers silver and get silver for yourself and your children" But it has nothing to do with silver. With a few exceptions, real silver will always be clearly marked - either with purity marks regulated by the government of the country where it was made, or for countries such as the USA where there is no government regulation of silver purity, by the manufacturer since they are able to sell solid silver objects for a much higher price than just silver plated objects. A company would be foolish not to apply a clear marking that their product is solid silver. As Hose_dk says, there are very few countries that have any government controls on silver plated objects and a company can mark or not mark their silver plated objects in whatever way they like. Many use marks that are similar to real silver hallmarks, or they use words that make people think of silver but are not actually saying it is silver to help with their marketing. For example, if you find something marked "German Silver" there will not be any silver in it at all. There are other words and phrases that companies use to try to sell silver plated objects, but some companies do not bother with such markings since they sell silver plated objects for relatively small prices. The reason is there is very little silver in a silver plated object combined with the fact that silver is not very valuable. For example, today the price of 1 ounce of pure silver is a little less than 10 euros. This amount of silver will be enough to apply heavy silver plating to 10 to 12 spoons or forks. There is not much difference between silver plated and non-silver plated objects in terms of value of the metal - the value of these things is mainly in the quality of the workmanship and the design, and the historical importance of the object. There are many silverplated and non-silver plated objects that are quite beautiful and well made and have value to collectors because of this.
