[26-1496] Just a short story,(no questions!). This week, I bought this little silverplated ash tray, after cleaning it I couldn't find any marks on it. (or I've to better look for it?). This one was stamped and silvered by the silversmith who thought to make a relation present for his best customer/s? The shop is gone I think for a long period. The silversmith put his address on the oven and above this oven, was mentioned his profession(translated smith of rings). His profession made by a cupido and two pigeons symbolic for love. This silversmith has died? His relation gift stood between a lot of second hand stuff. But his idea was good to show the people his profession and symbolic use some aspects which he found necessary, I think to create rings for the symbolic of love. One photo of the center of the ash-tray and I wonder if there are also ash-trays with nice subject decorations in the USA? etc?

This kind of object is collected in many countries mostly by by people who specialize in advertising collectables. Most companies, no matter what they make, have created objects from all kinds of materials including glass, metal, ceramic, wood, etc. that advertise their companies that they give away to the public. This has been going on for over a hundred years, and possibly much longer. The variety is endless. IP: Logged |

It frequently is not possible to know who made advertising items because the design was owned by the advertiser not the maker. My own understanding is that the shop would come up with a sketch of what they wanted. Then the design goes out for bid. Once the winning bid is awarded the contract, a final design is settled upon. The die is cut, the advertiser owns it. Then production begins. The quantity produced is determined by the most economical run, which yields the lowest cost per unit. The company now has the souvenir trays. My understanding is that these would be plated in small batches. And given out to customers over a long period of time. When the supply of plated pieces runs low, another batch is sent out for plating. When the original supply runs out, the whole cycle of bid, award, etc begins again. That is why we really can't determine the maker. IP: Logged |

Dale, Thanks for your economic story considering the retail trade etc. After a few times reading it, I saw the light. It wasn't my purpose to let the forum find out who this person was, because that's not economic to spend time in it. I understood your story and thanks for explaining all the matter. IP: Logged |
