Another find by my daughter is the unusual spoon that I think is a copy of a much earlier one. The images are a little spooky and it is in silver plate. Does anyone recognize this pattern? IP: Logged |

It's an interesting combination of an apostle spoon and then the design below almost looks like a green man face with harvest trim. There is another post on Green Man, but it's an early Celtic symbol of the harvest and fertility. IP: Logged |

Doc, Thanks for that information. Someone had an inventive mind to make it. IP: Logged |

Not where I can get to my references at the moment, but the manufacturer was Martin Hall & Co. of Sheffield, should date earlier than the late 1890s when the use of the crown on electroplate was banned. It's based on an old Continental Apostle spoon rather than British (probably Dutch), they often had similar decoration on the stem, perhaps further symbolism or images from a church - looks like your terminal figure is holding a staff along with his book, probably St. James the Elder (Greater). ~Cheryl

Thank you Cheryl for that information. The lower figure with large sunken eyes seems to be holding sheafs of wheat. This may be a symbol for something bountiful or reference to a successful harvest. The spooky look may not be intentional. IP: Logged |
