[26-2117] My elderly neighbors (both in 90's) have asked me to help clean and organize their house (he is somewhat of a pack rat) and in doing so have come across various items which the wife thinks may have belonged to her mother who originally owned the house. While cleaning up the basement I came across a silver or silverplated teapot and cup. The only mark on the teapot and cup is the number '22' stamped on the bottom of each. They might be plated as I see copper showing through the base of the teapot. The sides have flowers and leaves etched in it, the spout has what appears to be hummingbirds facing each other. I attempted to capture this in the photos but not sure if they can be seen. Any information on these would be greatly appreciated.

It's hard to tell from the photos, but that looks like nice silver-plated teapot from the last quarter of the 19th century. IP: Logged |

This little teapot is typical of American electro plate from the very late 1870s and well into the 1880s. It reflects the fascination with all things Japanese in this period, which is what curators refer to as part of the Aesthetic Reform Movement. It also shows a typical exuberance of form that is distinctive in electro-plate, because sterling manufacturers were aiming at a fancier clientele, and one that generally preferred safer (i.e. less out there) design. The lack of a mark is no surprise, because there were electroplate firms that didn't have big name recognition and wholesaled their stuff through places like Montgomery Ward, Erwin Russell (a hardware firm) and Sears & Roebuck. The teapot would surely have been part of a larger service. IP: Logged |

This is very similar to electroplate teapots made by Meridan Britannia in the 1880s. Here's one with a different body, but very similar finial.
